Grotto Canyon offers a unique experience in the winter, when visitors are able to hike the frozen creek, which snakes its way through the mountains. Grotto Creek is located just 10 minutes outside of Canmore and is perfect for adventure seekers and nature buffs.
Rock enthusiasts will be in their element as they pass through the water carved canyon that is home to limestone walls and frozen waterfalls. Be sure to grab your camera, as there will be photo opportunities around every bend.
On your icewalk through the canyon you will come across a section of limestone wall which is the canvass for aboriginal pictographs. These images are located at the narrowest point and are painted in red ochre. They are estimated to be 500 to 1500 years old. The pictographs depict several animals and people, and the meaning behind them is purely up to interpretation.
Travel Tip: Be sure to help preserve the pictographs for future trekkers by refraining to touch the paintings, they are already showing signs of erosion.
This adventure is considered a light hike of 4km with a minimal elevation of 50 meters. Make sure to give yourself between 3.5 to 4 hours. Whether you are an experienced hiker or new to the activity remember to have proper gear; ice grips on footwear are a must.
This hike is unlike any other, as you will see the Rocky Mountains from a whole new angle. Be sure to indulge in this rocky experience while staying in Canmore and visit www.banfftours.com for more details or to book your hike today.
